SCIENCE WORKSHOPS FOR TEACHERS (WORKSHOPS)

Grove of Hope offers science enrichment experiences for educators through our science workshops.  Our workshops are designed to provide teachers with current material and techniques which will capture the imagination of their students and make science fun to learn.

Our workshops consist of two sessions which are conducted by leading science educational specialists.  The first session is intended to expose teachers to current teaching resources and activities and the use of alternative teaching strategies including inquiry learning and educational technologies.

The second session consists of translation activities in which participants work with students and discover how to adapt their new content knowledge, experience, and materials into simulated educational situations.

SCIENCE SESSIONS FOR PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN (WORKSHOPS)

Studies have shown parents who are actively involved in their children’s education create a path for high academic achievement.  The purpose of our science sessions for parents and children is to provide an opportunity to excite children about science careers and to also highlight how parents can help their children develop an interest in pursuing science and technology studies.

Our science sessions are lead by renowned scientists who have made a difference in the advancement of science in their chosen fields.  The scientist presents his/her daily job activities, career achievements and educational background.  The scientist also emphasizes the importance of the parent’s involvement in both formal and informal learning activities. The session culminates in an open dialogue which provides both children and parents an opportunity to asks questions and seek answers.

SCIENCE IN OUR SCHOOLS

Grove of Hope recognizes the importance of investing in science enrichment support for the classroom.  We have provided partnership funding for classroom projects which are consistent with our mission and core beliefs.

The Sustainable School Yard
Consistent with our mission of applying science concepts to harness sustainable community development, Grove of Hope provided funding to support Manual Arts High School’s Eco Garden.  The Eco Garden provides students with an outdoor classroom for planning, developing and managing a working garden.

“1 to 1 Learning” Program
Grove of Hope is proud to have contributed funding to Ivanhoe Elementary School’s  “1 to 1 Learning” Program.  In partnership with Apple Computers, Ivanhoe Elementary School aims to put a laptop computer in the hands of each student.  A computer for each child enables all students to readily access information across curriculum.  Consistent with our belief that learning science must be fun and engaging, the “1 to 1 Learning” Program makes science concepts come to life in the classroom; students are able to peer through the eye of the Hubble telescope, view satellite imagery in studying the affects of global weather patterns, etc.

SCIENCE WEEK WITH AFRICA

Grove of Hope recognizes the important role science plays in economic growth and the reduction of poverty.  Our annual science week in Africa is aimed at bringing together science teachers from the West and science teachers from Africa to a central meeting location so that the teachers can share successful teaching methodologies and their experiences with teaching science in the classroom.  The outcome of science week is to ensure the teachers from the different regions are able to adapt successful methodologies and resources to the unique needs of their classrooms.
